Street smart

Before Andrew was born, 50% of the Davidows were pretty good with streets and directions.  That 50% has a J somewhere in their names.

It's official: the street smart Davidows now hold a solid 60% majority.

No trip is immune from Andrew's backseat driving.  "Mama, this is I-10."  "Mama, get on the HOV."  "Mama, stop so you don't hit that SUV."  [Note: the SUV was 3 car lengths in front of me.]

Favorite streets include Westview, Bingle, Campbell, Woodway, Voss, Wirt, Chimney Rock, and Westheimer.  He can accurately identify those actual roads and drives roughly 75% of the time.  He knows Wirt turns into Chimney Rock and Bingle turns into Voss and Westheimer is how you get to the pizza place.

He has declared the right side of our street to be Westview and the left side Bingle.  Or vice versa.  I routinely get my ass handed to me when my foot strays onto one or the other as I'm sprinting to keep up with him on his trike rides.

I don't drive a car.  I drive an SUV.  Think about all the phrases you say to a little kid with "the car": "get in the car," "you can look at it in the car," "we left it in the car," etc.  Now imagine being told, in no uncertain terms, "NO, THE SUV" every single time you say one of them.

It's as if he knows he has to compensate for the 40%.

Yet another reason I should turn off the DVD player in the car. I'm pretty sure my children have no idea where we live. (Just kidding. Mostly.)
